Remote work is more than a convenience—it’s a lifeline

Today, I want to talk about something that’s been gaining momentum in recent years—a topic close to my heart and so full of possibilities: the benefits of remote work for working mothers.

In 2019, only 3.7% of online job postings offered remote work. By 2022, that number had jumped to 16.8%, and it’s still climbing. As of now, 17.6% of job ads mention remote options.

Did you know that 69% of us mothers work part-time? It makes sense, right? If you can afford it and it fits your family setup, why not?

In eastern Germany, for example, schools and daycares are open until 5 p.m. That’s a luxury. But if that’s not your reality, part-time work often feels like the only option.

And let’s be honest—many of us want to be there for our kids: to take care of them, drive them to hobbies, and just… be present. I know as a child, I would’ve loved someone to be there waiting for me after school. Instead, we were left to our own devices while our parents were at work—or busy with a home renovation project.

But here’s the thing: being a part-time mom comes at a high cost.

Over a lifetime, mothers working part-time earn 40–50% less and risk facing poverty in old age. That’s something we can’t ignore. As fulfilling as being a mom is—and it truly is—it doesn’t contribute to your pension.

This is where remote work shines. It gives us moms the chance to stay fully engaged in our careers and be there for our families. With the right employer, it’s a real game-changer—a way to blend family life and work-life without sacrificing one for the other.

Here’s why remote work is such a gift for working mothers:

1️⃣ Flexibility for your daily rhythm

Let’s start with the obvious: flexibility. As a mom, you know life with kids is anything but predictable—sick days, last-minute plans, you name it. Remote work lets you adjust your schedule to meet your kids’ needs.
Pick them up from school, handle homework breaks, or spend extra time together when needed. If I need more time during the day, I just add an hour of work in the evening. Easy.

2️⃣ Say goodbye to long commutes

Commuting? Such a time-suck. When I worked in Sydney as a solo mom, my day started at 6 a.m.—workout, breakfast, get ready, drop my daughter at daycare, and rush to the office. By 8:30, I was at my desk. And in the evening? Reverse that hustle: 5 p.m. out the door, 6 p.m. daycare pick-up, exhausted but powering through.

Thanks to my forward-thinking employer, I had two remote days per week back in 2019. Even then, it felt revolutionary. Now, with remote work as the norm, imagine how many hours—and how much stress—you could save. For me, it was two hours daily. That’s time I got back for myself and my daughter. Plus, less commuting means saving money and cutting your carbon footprint.

3️⃣ Boost your productivity

Studies show remote workers are often more productive than their in-office peers. And let’s face it: moms are productivity machines. Working from home means fewer distractions and more focus—though I’ll admit, I do miss the occasional coffee break gossip.

4️⃣ Save money, stress less

Remote work can save you a lot—on transportation, office attire, eating out, and even childcare. Every penny saved is a penny you can spend on family outings, hobbies, or those little surprises for your kids.

5️⃣ Invest in your career growth

Here’s the cherry on top: remote work can open doors to career growth. Without the drain of daily commutes, you have more energy and time for learning. Many companies now offer online training programs as part of their benefits. It’s a fantastic opportunity to upskill and keep your career moving forward.

Think of it this way: working from home gives you the space to focus on yourself, learn new things, and build your future—all while being the amazing mom you are.

Remote work is more than a convenience—it’s a lifeline. It lets us mothers bridge the gap between family and career, even if it doesn’t solve everything. Yes, there will always be compromises, but this setup brings us a step closer to balance.

Flexibility, time savings, reduced costs, and the ability to keep growing professionally—it’s all within reach. Even if you’re not working remotely now, start the conversation with your boss. Who knows? You might open the door to a whole new way of working—and living.
